The Dunbar-Carver Museum tells the story of African American life in Haywood County TN through portrayal of events associated with the one hundred plus year existence of the Dunbar-Haywood County Training-Carver High School in Brownsville.

                             lynching of an African American in Haywood County in 1940.
                             Presenter, Dr. Zanice Bond. Note: Reception for Dr. Bond who
                             was recently awarded PHD immediately following the
                             program.


Mar 12, 2012       Rawls Funeral Home - The founding, and growth of numerous
                           for-profit and not-for-profit enterprises started by Mr. Charles Allen
                           Rawls in the 1930s. Presenter for this session will be Mrs. Cynthia 
                           Rawls-Bond.


Apr 11, 2012       The Help - Making A Living. This conversation will include a review and
                            excerpt from the book and movie "The Help". The conversation will review
                            experiences of African-American women in Haywood County in similiar
                            work circumstances.


May 9, 2012        County Records - Trust Deeds and School Records. This conversation will
                            include a review of historical genealogical data available from public
                            records.


There are no conversations scheduled for June, July, and August 2012. Conversations will resume Septermber 12, 2012.

 

ABOUT THE DUNBAR CARVER MUSEUM

The Dunbar-Carver Museum is the educational unit of the Dunbar-Haywood County Training-Carver High School (D-HCT-CHS) National Alumni Association.  The purpose of the museum is to present life in Haywood County from the African American perspective.  This includes, but is not restricted to, the preservation and presentation of material artifacts such as pictures, clothing, biographies, films, written records, audio tapes, etc.; conducting historical research; presenting periodic workshops, displays, and seminars.

                The physical location of the museum is Brownsville, Haywood County, Tennessee.  The Dunbar-Carver Museum is supported through contributions and grants.  The Museum's activities are overseen by a Board of Directors. The Board consists of eleven members appointed by the President of the National D-HCT-CHS Alumni Association. Board vacancies will be filled by nominations by the President of the National Board D-HCT-CHS Alumni Association and the approval of two-thirds of the board members.

                The Board consists of the following positions:

                The Chair- An Alumnus/Alumna who resides in Haywood County and has knowledge of the administrative operations of an educational unit such as a museum (no term limitation);

                First Vice President of the National D-HCT-CHS Alumni Association;

                President of the Brownsville Chapter of the D-HCT-CHS Alumni Association;

                The 2 At-Large Members of the National Alumni Association;

                A Member with demonstrated professional work related to the museum's purpose (no term

               limitation);

                A Representative from the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce;

                A Community Representative who has a documented history of supporting the Haywood County

               African American community (no term limitation);

                An Alumnus/Alumna who financially supports the museum; and

                Two Representatives, selected for two-year terms each, from the active chapters on a rotational

               basis, based on alphabetical order: Brownsville, Chicago, Decatur, Detroit, Memphis,

               Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Washington.

 

                The Board of Directors of the Dunbar-Carver Museum will:

                                1.  Maintain a separate bank account for the Museum and keep records of income and

                                      expenditures

                                2.   Make an annual written report to the Board of Directors of the National D-HCT-CHS

                                      Alumni Association

                                3.  Make a report to the general alumni membership at the All Classes Reunion

                                4.  Meet twice a year or as necessary, as determined by the Chair of the Museum's 

                                     Board of Directors.

                                5.  Oversee all matters concerning the Museum, including expenditures, hours of

                                      operation, programs, displays etc. The Chairman of the Board of Directors is

                                      empowered to make non-policy decisions in lieu of the full board.

                The Dunbar-Carver Museum has two (2) key positions: Curator and Coordinator of Docents.

 

                The Curator oversees the daily operation of the Museum; plans and puts together exhibits;

                works with other community entities in publicizing the Museum's holdings, etc.  The Curator

               reports to the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Dunbar-Carver Museum.

                The Coordinator of Docents recruits and trains volunteers to staff the Museum during its

               hours of operation.  The coordinator of docents reports to the Curator.
